A Big Party for Little Ib

For her second birthday Ibbie had just one request, "A big party." She created and listed her dream guest list which included friends and family as well as, "chocolate cake, brownies, donuts, cream cheese, M&M's, and ice cream." With the help of 50 guests who came from 5 states, it all came together like a dream at our Little Kid, Big Party party.

Many, many thanks to my friend Melissa who brought and used her camera so that I didn't have to.

Dog Crates

Our dog crates have been used and abused this winter and Lily is now in total rebellion. After six years as a crate-trained dog, she is over it. She's broken out of the crate twice daily for over a week; locks and carabiners can't hold her in. Today I finally bit the bullet and gave her (and Gunther) free reign of the house while we were out. We picked up and but away all toys and papers before we left. I cannot overstate how much I detest coming home to some unknown destruction, be it of a toy, book, or door frame. The dogs behaved themselves so this may be the way of the future.

With the crates mostly empty over the last few days, Ibbie has declared the space her new play area. We all love our dogs, even when they frustrate us and destroy property, but no one loves them more than Ib. I dare say she plays in the crates with the hope the dogs will join her.

Celebrating Ib!

Turning one was a major affair for Ibbie. Due to travels and work schedules, she was celebrated three times with different parts of our family.

First up: Pop Pop Tim. My dad arrived at our house early in the morning. We made a day of it going to the zoo and out to lunch before heading back home for a small dessert.

Next up: Scottie and Bigs. Mom and Rodney came up for a little dinner celebration. It was a pizza party!
Finally: Ib's birthday party. Peter's folks came up from Georgia and many relatives drove in from Pennsylvania, Lower Delaware, and Maryland. There wasn't a theme but Ibbie was celebrated all day!

Ibbie :: 1 Year

The goose is one. Holy moly. Our days are better because she is in them! Ibbie is an eight-toothed, walking, talking smile. She's so easy going. Ib loves to play with other kids, younger or older. She's a good eater and good relaxer. No one can stop her from getting comfortable. Ibbie signs a bit and has a phenomenal slow nod for "yes."

She wakes up once or twice a night but we're working on it. She's also still nursing but we're working on weaning. She didn't take to cows milk so we're cutting it with goat's milk in an effort to ease the transition.

We're so delighted to celebrate this little one that we're stretching her birthday festivities out for a couple of weeks.

Ibbie :: 11 months

We have a walker! Ibbie has gained a great deal of stability and her balance is improving. She walks in little spurts, with a personal best of twelve steps. She is a happy, happy girl. And so chill. She's very content to play alone though she still loves to play with Cole and the girls just love to laugh together.  Sometimes Cole will crawl with Ibbie they both think it's hysterical.

Ibbie is a good eater but her preference is smoothies! She gets so excited when she hears the blender going. She prefers protein more than Cole ever has: chicken nuggets, sausage, eggs, ground beef, and so on.

We've been phasing out Ib's morning nap. She handles the extended wake time fairly well but is more than ready to nap when the time comes. Typically, she'll nap for 75-90 minutes. Nighttime is a different story. She'll sleep for 10.5-11 hours waking two or three times to nurse.  I suspect that her teeth are keeping her up. She has eight and some of those are still erupting.

Ib watches Cole like a hawk. She has quite the sense of adventure and a very curious spirit. These two ladies are quite the duo.

Ibbie :: 10 months

Ibbie is eager to be a toddler! She stands on her own. She says, "Mama" and "Dada." And she has mastered the straw sippy cup. She is also clapping, waving, high-fiveing, hugging and kissing. For two months now, she's refused all baby food and exclusively self-fed. How can this girl be so close to a year old? Ibbie has become increasingly vocal this month. She loves to talk and she loves to watch Cole.

Ibbie is our tiny dancer. She'll play music just to dance, she'll dance through her meals, and if anyone else starts dancing she'll join in. Cole has a particularly unique dance move where she lifts one leg in the air; since Ibbie is always watching Cole, she imitates the same move. It seems the Slaton sisters have their own signature dance move!

Ib's has the sweetest little personality. She is outgoing and very friendly. Often smiling or laughing, she has such a pleasant disposition. But she is sensitive. Very, very sensitive. We have to be exceptionally gentle with her and make sure to keep a close eye during playdates or her feelings may be hurt. Luckily, Cole is always looking out for her sister and helping to keep her from getting upset.

Ibbie :: 9 months

It's summertime in Delaware! I've been taking the girls to the pool and Ibbie loves to play in the water, just like her sister. She and Cole splash in the bath tub but the swimming pool takes the splashing to a whole new level. We've also been to a few parks and zoos. Ibbie happily strolls along! Our goose is nothing if not a happy girl.

This month she survived the arrival of her two top, front teeth, her first night/weekend away from us, and sleeping through the night (10:30pm-6:10am). She's still pulling up and cruising but gets around much more quickly when she crawls.

Ibbie :: 8 months*

*make that 8 months, 9 days

Oh goodness, this month was the month of mobility! In a flash, Ibbie went from scooting to crawling to pulling up and cautiously cruising. Thank heavens, it was also the month we moved into our new house which has far fewer stairs than our rental home.

Ibbie mastered sitting up this month. And started to eat picky foods at every meal. She loves strawberries and Cheerios. Though, she may like spitting them into her lap even more than she likes to mash them in her mouth. Ibbie has her two front, bottom teeth and, from what I can tell, no signs of others. She continues to be a solid sleeper though she's quite the early birth, monologuing around 5 o'clock each morning. Who can blame her though? She is practically begging for her crib by the time we put her down at 6:15pm.

Little sister is smitten with Cole and the dogs. And Peter and I manage to put a smile on her face, not that getting Ib to smile is a challenge.

Ibbie :: 7 months

What a happy baby Ibbie is! With some of the bluest eyes I've ever seen!

This month Ib has tried more and more food with a distinct preference for meat. Chicken and apples. Sweet potatoes and turkey. It grosses me out but she loves it.  She goes through waves of hunger. Sometimes she'll eat less than half a jar per meal and other times she'll eat as much as two jars in a sitting.

Ibbie isn't sitting up yet, but she motors around the room and stands with support. Her Aunt Nancy suggested that there is just too much to do to spend anytime sitting around. I think she's probably right.

Ib has one bottom tooth with another about to break through. She's handling teething pretty well, just gumming every toy in sight.

Growing Girls

How can I possibly have a daughter who willingly participates in dental cleanings? And another who is eyeing the stairs in hopes of domination? These girls are growing with every blink.

Ibbie :: 6 Months

At six months Ibbie is chatty, friendly, and remarkably laid-back.

The biggest change in the last month was the introduction of solid foods. I was planning on going with baby led weaning but Ibbie's sleep patterns started changing. And not for the better. Peter and I decided she was hungry so we went ahead and introduced solids the typical way with rice cereal and baby food. Her sleep patterns improved. To date, she has had peas, carrots, sweet potatoes, apples, pears, mangos, bananas, and prunes. She loves it all! We did let her gum a banana the other night and she enjoyed it after getting over the initial disappoint that she couldn't nurse the banana.

Ibbie :: 5 Months

Ibbie is five months and a day old. And she's awesome.

She loves to laugh, smile, gnaw on her hands, and play with her feet. She sleeps well at night but is not much of a napper.  Ibbie has been dragging herself around by pushing her torso off the ground and pulling her legs in then pushing off. She rolls both ways in all directions.

Ibbie likes her routine. And she loves to nurse. This gal never passes up a feeding! She, like her sister, never takes a bottle so we'll be introducing sippy cups sooner rather than later.  We're putting off the introduction of solids. I am going to skip the baby food in favor of baby-led weaning in a month or so.

Ibbie :: 4 months

I missed Ibbie :: 3 months. And I'm not going to make it up. It included getting situated in Delaware, Thanksgiving, and Christmas during all of which Ibbie survived.

Ibbie's forth month has been fun. She started to giggle and seems to be becoming more ticklish. She is chatty, chatty, chatty, babbling nonstop. In the last couple of weeks, she's been pulling herself around her playmat. She moves a bit like an injured inch worm as she pulls her feet into her torso then pushes off, sliding, face first, across the floor since she lacks the upper body strength to push up. It's a sight!

Cole and Ibbie seem to be developing a bit more of a relationship. Cole knows the things that Ibbie likes and is quick to retrieve those items if Ibbie becomes upset. The girls can also make one another laugh which is a treasure!

I think her hair is growing longer and thinning out. We'll have to see what becomes of her do in month five.

Ibbie :: 2 Months

Ibbie's second month seemed faster than her first. My word. If this keeps up she'll be on her way to grade school in a blink. Peter was in Maryland for the majority of the month settling into his new job which left my focus on survival.

Between keeping the girls clean and fed, I did notice a few changes. This month Ibbie's night time sleep continued to improve. One night she slept for eight hours! Ibbie also found her smile this month which has been so sweet to see. Here's hoping I can get a picture of her sweet smile in month three.
